Marine bow chock are a crucial type of accessory on the boat. Their primary function is to guide anchor rope safely around the boat's side and prevent the ropes from being chafed by metal edges.
The heavy bow chock is suitable for installation at positions with high stress. This bow chock can usually be applied in front of the mooring posts at the bow, stern or midsection of the boat. When the rope needs to change direction, the bow chock can provide a smooth turning point.
The opening of the bow chock should in the opposite direction of the rope's movement. Otherwise, when the rope slackens, it will slip out through the opening. Especially at the bow position, the released ropes may directly hit the hull or the deck, which is extremely dangerous.
If the bow chock is directly installed, when the rope is under tension, the bow chock will concentrate the force around the installation hole. Over time, this may cause damage to the hull or the deck. When installing the bow chock, adding a stainless steel backing plate can help distribute the tension.
During daily inspections, one should observe whether there are any abnormal bright surfaces, burrs or small pits at the contact position between the bow chock and the rope. Small pits or abnormal bright surfaces usually indicate that the diameter of the rope does not match the bow chock. You can try adjusting the installation angle of the bow chock, or replace it with a more suitable rope. And the burrs will accelerate the wear and tear of the rope. At this point, the bow chock needs to be polished or replaced. Furthermore, if the main body of the bow chock becomes significantly deformed, it is necessary to replace the bow chock immediately.
